The Young Gods – Nação Zumbi project is a collaboration between two geographically distant groups who nonetheless share a common artistic approach. A story that began 26 years ago: the two groups first met in 1996 at Dour Festival in Belgium, and became instant friends. Chico Science and Nação Zumbi invited The Young Gods to play the opening set of their up-coming Brazilian tour scheduled the following year. Unfortunately, Chico Science died in a car accident during the 1997 Carnival in Recife, when he was barely 30 years old. Of course, the tour project was shelved. But Nação Zumbi decided to continue, with Jorge Du Peixe, their percussionist, taking over as singer.

To this day Nação Zumbi continues to play in the spirit of Mangue Beat and to propose new sounds.
Twenty years after the groups’ initial meeting, the events organized by Présence Suisse in parallel to the 2016 Olympics present a new opportunity to bring the bands together. This time, the goal is not a tour with one band playing after the other, but a fusion, with both groups on stage simultaneously, playing together as they cover their respective repertoires, as well as perform new songs that have created together.

Switzerland and Brazil come together for a unique musical experience, mixing Nação Zumbi’s rhythms with The Young Gods’ sounds, a trans-Atlantic back-and-forth, a globalization of sounds, a sharing of ideas and energy, an international exchange at a time when countries are building walls and closing borders.

Recorded live during the 50th Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland on 9th July 2016.
