MARK BERUBE - Russian Dolls

by MARK BERUBE

  • Release Dater: 25.04.2014
  • Catalog No: TWOGTL 051

With Russian Dolls, Berube has found a new home in Bonsound Records  signalling a shift and a bloom, an arrival to the sea after the mountainous scenic-route, the subtle transitioning of seasons perceived as yet only by fleeting scent or distant bird song. The new album weds the epic to the intimate, the acoustic to the synthetic, the past to the future in delightful ways, always leaving the listener to wonder what will be revealed behind the next door. Recorded at Breakglass Studios in Montreal and produced by Jace Lasek (Suuns, Patrick Watson, Land of Talk, Sunset Rubdown, Young Galaxy), the album is a product of its environment – that of analog organs, echoey upright pianos, synthesizers generously loaned by compatriots, small boxes with many nobs, rotating overdriven speakers, marimbas and reverby amps, all tamed and moulded by Lasek’s deft hands. Amélie Mandeville on bass and Tonio Morin-Vargas on drums contributed to the pulsing drive, the wicked grooves and delicate finesse to the inspired arrangements.
